Character Information:

Sandalphon was not born, rather he was made by the supreme primarch at the time, Lucifer. Lucifer’s superior and Astral head of the research team, Lucilius, had asked him to bring a new archangel into being, while at the same time, not telling him why it needed to happen. For most of Sandalphon’s life, he was confined to a small indoor garden, being made to run tests daily with researchers who didn’t really care for him as a person. His only true connection for some time was with Lucifer, spending time with him in the garden whenever the supreme primarch had time to spare. These meetings are what sparked his love of coffee, as Lucifer introduced him to the beverage when he made it for Sandalphon (it wasn’t good, but it was an attempt).

When Lucifer found out Lucilius’ reasons for having Sandalphon created, which was to be Lucifer’s spare should he fall, Sandalphon found out as well. It was a simple eavesdropping, but Sandalphon’s soul was shattered. It sent him spiraling into despair. Coupled with Lucifer’s less frequent visits and Belial messing with his already fragile mental state, he planned for revolution. Vengance became his entire reason to live, and he ended up participating in a failed coup against the Astral researchers. Sandalphon ended up locked in a hellscape called Pandemonium to live out eternal punishment.

Sandalphon did find out how to escape, and started on his path to vengeance anew. Even though two thousand years had passed, he was still determined to destroy a world that didn’t need him. By taking the source of power away from the elemental Primarchs, Sandalphon was close to bringing the world to ruin, but was stopped by the Grandcypher crew. Unable to fight and thought to be atoning for his crimes, he tries to offer a truce to the Captain of the crew. The Captain falls for it, and Sandalphon pushes them off a cliff and into endless sky. While Sandalphon hoped that this would cause the of releasing the chaos that lay within Pandemonium, this backup plan was also thwarted by the supreme primarch himself, Lucifer.

Out of options and forced to confront his old friend about his actions, Sandalphon lets loose all the feelings of despair he’s held on for so long.

“It could've been anyone. Anyone at all. I just wanted one person in the world to tell me that I matter—that I'm needed! Do you even know what that's like? Someone like you born out of necessity and looked up to by all the archangels could never fathom that pain! I don't care if the whole world hates me! I…”

Lucifer’s words of apology only served to annoy Sandalphon even more, and Lucifer was forced to seal Sandalphon away.

After an unspecified amount of time, Sandalphon is seen tending to coffee trees in his prison made by Lucifer, accepting his fate of being trapped forever. However, Lyria challenges this and makes him realize that accepting punishment is not a proper way to show remorse, rather it is to change and become a new person. This is enough to break him out of the prison, forcing him to regain a physical form back in the real world. He senses Lucifer and seeks him out, only to find Lucifer’s head as the only remaining piece of his body on the floor. Sandalphon runs over, already wondering how the almighty Supreme Primarch fell to this point.

Managing to catch Lucifer’s spirit, Sandalphon manages to catch one last meeting with his friend. He managed to hear Lucifer’s last requests, which was to protect the skies and eliminate the threat that was Lucilius’ legacy. Before fading away, Lucifer gave the title of supreme primarch and the powers that came with it to Sandalphon, leaving nothing behind save for a wish to spend a bit more time with him with a cup of coffee in the shaded garden. Sandalphon questions Lucifer’s motives and the fate that had befallen his friend as he grieves, lamenting the fact that the six white wings he’s been given are too white for him to bear. Lyria eventually meets him and is about to comment, but isn’t given time as a beast only known as Avatar is let loose unto the world.

In order to try and fulfill Lucifer’s last request after pulling Lyria, Vyrn, and the Captain to safety, he rushes in to fight the people orchestrating the events, Belial and Beezlebub, but both of them leave when the Avatar interrupts. Sandalphon is able to defeat him once, but drains himself of energy to the point where he starts freefalling due to the inability to keep his wings manifested. He’s caught by the Grandcypher’s crew, using the airship to try and escape. The Avatar manages to revive rather quickly, and Sandalphon is forced to team up with the Grandcypher crew. With their help, he is able to take down the beast a second time, saving the skies for the time being.

Eventually, Lucilius is revived, and the legacy Lucifer wanted to stop was revealed: Lucilius planned to release the hells that laid dormant in what’s known as the Crimson Horizon, and reduce everything to nothingness. Asking the Grandcypher crew once more for help, Sandalphon rushes in to end it all. While they face the endless horde of corrupted angels while they travel, the elemental primarchs look to Sandalphon for guidance, even though the doubts they carry about him are monumental.

Micheal especially brings this to light, saying that as his adjutant, she is to pass on Lucifer’s concerns about the sky realm as well as assisting Sandalphon as supreme primarch. Sandalphon takes her words into consideration, but is unable to answer as they start to draw closer to their destination. While chasing down Lucilius, Belial cuts them off and forces them to fight. Sandalphon is unable to hurt him and is blown back, doubt in his abilities starting to set in.

Micheal is able to stop this self doubt from settling in as she shields Sandalphon from a finishing blow, showing surprise in his growth in such a short time. She then hands over the powers of the primarchs, stating that while Lucifer was irreplaceable, so was Sandalphon, and throwing his life away was worthless, and that he should carve out his own vision of the future. This alone shocked Sandalphon to his core, but it also gave him resolve. He was able to fight once more using the powers given to him by the primarchs, but falters once more when Belial starts to tell him how Lucifer died. This time, however, it was the Captain who kept Sandalphon on track. Showing gratitude once more, Sandalphon was able to defeat Belial.

They eventually make their way to where Lucilius is, in a tower only known as Entemenanki. They discover that while one plan was ruined, he had another in store: this time, he would cause the apocalypse using the tower as a spear. Sandalphon and the crew realize that stopping Lucilius was the only plan forward, but the height of Lucilus’ power far exceeded anything they expected.

While buying time, Sandalphon asks the Grandcypher crew to retreat and leave him behind in order to fight Lucilius. Lyria and Vyrn catch on quickly, and realize that Sandalphon planned on dying there in order to fulfill his promise. Lyria clearly shows distress at the thought, while Vyrn quickly jumped into action. Vyrn attacks Lucilius without care for his safety, saying that while he may be a grumpy man, Sandalphon changed and had become someone he grew to care for. Sandalphon questions this, but then realizes that he blinded himself to their emotions, and wants to do better not for anyone else, but for himself.

With that resolve, Lyria’s white plume glows and grants Sandalphon the power needed to defeat Lucilius, but despite that, he still asks the Grandcypher crew to fight with him. They agree wholeheartedly, which gives Sandalphon the encouragement he needed. Once the crisis of Lucilius and Entemenanki falling is resolved and everyone is on the way home, Lyria is blown off the Grandcypher and into what seems to be a rift. Using the last bits of his power, Sandalphon sends Lyria back to the Grandcypher and disappears.

Where he ends up is in the old shaded garden with Lucifer pouring coffee for the both of them. The two of them have some much needed closure after reporting that Lucilius’ plans are foiled. Sandalphon starts out by laying out his regrets, not asking for forgiveness for his crimes. However, Lucifer counters that with explaining his own feelings: that no matter what the world may think of him, Sandalphon “will always be his solace”. Sandalphon promises to remember those words, and is almost tempted into staying a bit longer, but is stopped by both Vyrn and Lyria calling out to him.

Sandalphon explains to him that even though he didn’t know what he wanted to do after fulfilling his promise to him in the beginning, he knows now: he wants to stay in the sky realm with his friends. With Lucifer’s encouragement, he returns to the real world where he finds Lyria, Vyrn and the Captain reaching out for him from the tiny Nightcypher, trying to catch him from his freefall. Once caught, they all agree to head back to the Grandcypher. Sandalphon agrees, calling it home. Several days later, Lyria and Vyrn convince Sandalphon to open up a cafe aboard the Grandcypher, to which he reluctantly agrees, if only to keep Lyria smiling. He then tells the Captain that he plans on staying with them just a bit longer “in order to fulfill my own wish, this time”.

Personality:
Sandalphon has the personality of someone who’d be told they have a stick up their ass. Once he has a goal in mind, either set by himself or others, he sees his way through to the end, no matter what may come. Whether it be destroying the skies through opening up the gates of Pandemonium, or protecting them by defeating the one orchestrating a “grand finale”, he tries his very best to do what he feels is right. He doesn’t even join the Grancypher crew for tea time when headed to the final battle, as he feels it was just wasting time (and wasting anything is a big no-no with the supreme primarch). Vyrn calls him “Grumplephon” often in reference to this goal-driven attitude, which is often met with more words of “getting serious”.

He shows a tendency to dislike people who have more of a carefree or laid back attitude, or are known as the jokester type. Whenever Vyrn or the twin archangels of instruction, Halluel and Malluel, try to poke and prod Sandalphon, he gets visibly irritated, often telling them to cut to the chase. Of course, no one ever does, which ends up irritating him even more. Sandalphon even returns the pokes with some of his own, sometimes being extremely insulting as he does. Lucio, however, is a special case, as he shares the same face as his old friend Lucifer. The fact throws him for such a loop that he’s always yelling at him for something.

Sandalphon is calculating, always trying to figure out what’s the best course of action, and as such can be considered a natural born leader. He planned out the destruction of the world down to the letter, and even had a backup plan just in case. He’s often considered silver tongued as well, sometimes able to convince other crewmates of what the battle plan should be, even to those who wouldn’t listen, such as Michael and the other Archangels. The influence of the title of supreme primarch had its weight, of course, but by the end of the final fight, they were willingly listening to Sandalphon, surprising even him.

Throughout his time with the Grancypher crew, he learned how to socialize with others, as his only experience with socializing was with Lucifer. With this came the kindness he thought he had lost with time. By the end of 000, he’s learned to treat others appropriately, even calling them friends, but sometimes questions whether he’s doing a good job. However, if characters like Lyria and Vyrn warmed up to him quickly, it shows that he’s doing a good job at adapting. He even finds himself laughing along with the crew’s antics, something he thought was impossible after losing himself to vengeance and being locked away because of it.

Being created has its struggles, as Sandalphon struggles to hold any self-worth. When he overheard that he was only a replacement, it sent him spiraling into despair. He tried everything to try and find a purpose, even trying to cause the end of the world through opening the gates of Pandemonium as a form of revenge. Coupled with two thousand years of being locked away, he finds no reason for being alive. He even planned on dying in the final battle, believing his only remaining role to be complete. He eventually found his self-worth with the help of the Grancypher crew, but the fear of not being good enough holds him back from being his best person. Even with people like Lyria leading him in the right direction, he still doubts he can make a difference.

Sandalphon, at his core, is someone who lost their innocence and wants nothing more to get it back, but can’t no matter how hard he tries. He’s always trying to atone for his actions of his past, wanting to do right by his old friend Lucifer and the faith he put into him. His atonement comes in many forms, from his promise to protect the skies not because he was told to, but because he wants to, to starting a cafe aboard the Grancypher just because both Lyria and Vyrn wanted him to. He knows he can’t ever retrieve that innocence, however he will try his damnedest to make sure that at least he made someone proud.
